Malachi 2:4-7 affirms that the Levites and priests had been chosen by God to teach in His name: “Then you shall know that I sent this commandment to you, that My covenant with Levi may continue. These sacrifices taught people about the penalty of sin and prefigured Jesus giving His life as a sacrifice for our sins.ĭuring the reign of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, we also read that some of the priests, Levites and leaders within the kingdom “went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people” ( 2 Chronicles 17:9). The Bible reveals that they were given specific responsibilities related to taking care of the tabernacle and carrying out the work of the tabernacle, which included the various animal sacrifices ( Exodus 27:21 18:1 30:30 Numbers 25:11-13). What did God have in mind when He chose the Levites and the house of Aaron (the priests)? The Bible reveals that they had already been chosen, in a sense, to be servants of God. ![]() What kind of people were they? God chose Zacharias and Elizabeth for the special task of rearing and teaching a miracle child He provided. We also read in the next verse that they both were “righteous” and “blameless” as they were walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. Here is a married couple with a profound lineage-both were from Aaron’s priestly family. And clearly we see that Elizabeth was also of the house of Aaron. To serve as a priest in the temple, one had to be of the tribe of Levi and, more specifically, of the Levitical family of Aaron. Zacharias, John’s father, was a priest of God. ![]() Most people quickly read over this passage and don’t realize what is being revealed. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.” Elizabeth proclaimed to Mary, “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of they womb” – a part of the Hail Mary said daily by millions of people.Luke 1:5 says, “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. Elizabeth greeted Mary in her six month of pregnancy, and John leapt in her womb. He doubted, and was unable to speak until the birth of John. Her husband was a priest in the temple, and angel Gabriel appeared to him, telling him his prayer was heard, and Elizabeth would bear a son in her old age. Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist. And blessed is she that believed, for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord”. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Luke 1:41-45, “And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. After, Mary was also informed that her “Cousin Elizabeth” had begun her sixth month of pregnancy, and traveled to visit her. According to the account, the angel Gabriel was then sent to Nazareth in Galilee to her “cousin” Mary, a virgin, espoused to a man called Joseph, and informed her that she would conceive by the Holy Ghost and bring forth a son to be called Jesus. In Luke we read, “And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, thus the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men”. The angel identified himself as Gabriel and said he would be “dumb, and not able to speak” until the words were fulfilled, because he did not believe. Zacharias doubted this since both he and his wife were very old. Luke 1:15, “For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb”. Luke 1:14, “And thou shalt have joy and gladness and many shall rejoice at his birth”. In Luke 1:13, “But the Angel said until him, fear not, Zacharias for thy prayer is heard and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John”. While Zacharias was ministering in the Temple of the Lord, he was visited by the angel Gabriel, Luke 8:12. ![]() She and her husband Zacharias were “righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless” 1:6, but childless. According to the Gospel of Luke, Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron the high priest, Luke 1:5-7. Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist and the wife of Zacharias according to the Gospel of Luke.
